I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend! Since it’s kind of a short week for me with my NYC trip starting Thursday, it’s time to get right down to business…

I wanted to get into a business topic today about being open or closed on holidays. Just about everyone closes on the really big ones – in the States that really means Christmas as the mother of all holidays (in my opinion at least), but the other ones are kind of hit or miss. On Easter, for example, lots of restaurants were open, but a few of the smaller ones weren’t, most shopping destinations were closed, but grocery stores weren’t.

I’ve noticed a pattern with how a business spins their being open or closed on certain holidays – it’s either one of two things:

“For our customer’s convenience, we will be open on Easter Sunday.”

- or -

“To allow our employees time to spend with family and friends, we will be closed on Easter Sunday.”

So, my question is, do you as a consumer find one or the other more appealing? Do you think, “Aw, that’s nice that they’re giving their employees a day off,” or do you think “don’t care, wanted to go shopping!”

Or on the flip side, do you think it’s disrespectful (not sure if that’s the right word) to be open on certain holidays?

What do you think? Have a great Monday!

I have really been thinking about this, this weekend. Here in Australia everything is closed on Good Friday. Shops are not allowed to open. Easter Sunday it's up to them but many close.
I think it's good that they close because I think that we all should get a holiday not just office workers and part of me really feels that we can do without needing to shop everyday.

Wow, shops aren't allowed to open? That's a foreign concept here :-) But I don't think it's the worst thing. It kind of keeps the business owners from having to take any flack if they want to close and let's face it, we all need time off every once in awhile!

Well…I went out to eat both on Good Friday and Easter Sunday! Even though we encountered some closed restaurants on Sunday, I'm glad there were still a few opens for those of use that do not really celebrate Easter Sunday.

I'm emailing you today! We need to set up a quick meeting while you're here :)

To me, it's a "turn-on" if a place that normally wouldn't do so, closes on holidays. For example – Publix advertises that they will be closed on major holidays to allow their employees time with their families, even though all the other grocery stores are open. You might think it would make them lose business, but It actually makes me want to shop there more when they are open because i know that they care about their employees. I worked at K-Mart as a teenager & they made me work on thanksgiving day and christmas eve when i was only 16. my mother was FURIOUS.

I kind of agree. Even though sometimes I might want to go shopping on a holiday, it's not the worst thing to make us stay home and spend time with family or at least just not spend money! And it's really good for the employees too of course. And that it is totally awful that you had to work on holidays at that age! It puts your mom in a weird position too.

    very, very well said!

The latter. As someone who's previously worked in retail, it was always fantastic to be able to have the time off (that we wouldn't usually receive) because it was ENFORCED time off – that, and I absolutely believe that we don't need to shop each day!

Fun! I'd love to go to NY!! Have a blast :)

As far as the way a business words being opened or closed doesn't really make a difference to me. Actually, it surprises me that stores are open more and more each holiday. I feel bad for the employees that have to work instead of being with their families.

I think it's a toss up – on one hand I would love it if all stores and establishments were cohesive and closed on the same day – but then again it is annoying when you need to make a grocery store trip or somewhere else and everything is closed – so I am on the fence about it ;)

Thanks to the Glen Beck wannabees this sort of talk is occasionally taken for granted.
