Joining up with the little things we do for Fill in the Blank Friday today!

1. My favorite new blog of the moment is

Just stumbled on “Oh Hello, Friend: you are loved” and am loving that one – especially the package swap!

2. Something I am thankful for is

My handsome husband and our supportive, wonderful families.

3. Something that made me laugh this week was

This video of a baby crying, and the only thing that will make him stop is when they play Notorious BIG. I would be so scared to condition my kid!

4. An item that is currently on my wish list is

This adorable Ipad case from EightSeasons on Etsy…

5. I am excited about

My trip. Sorry, I know you’re probably tired of hearing about it :-)

6. If I were a color I would be

Blue. I have phases when I’m really into different colors, but blue is probably the one I’m consistently drawn to.

7. My favorite way to spend a chilly fall day is by

Putting on boots and a scarf and walking around downtown or in the park. I have an unfair advantage that our chilly fall day is….65 lol

Happy weekend!

I’ll be landing in Venice with my handsome husband! I am just getting SO excited. Life is pretty hectic with getting ready to go and trying to get everything done for clients before I leave, but I know it will be worth it!

Happy Thursday!

One of the biggest decisions and probably the most confusing things when you start looking at and pricing wedding invitations is the PRINTING. There are many different types of printing with a wide range of prices, aesthetics, and benefits, so I thought I would throw together a little guide for you!

{Letterpressed invitation, digitally printed inserts – hard to see in the picture, but you can definitely feel tactile quality of the letterpress on Crane 220}

  • Digital Printing.  This is the most affordable type of printing and the one we do the most of at Dodeline.  It’s flat print, but the plus side is that there is no cost-per-color to be calculated (it’s either color or black and white), you can still print on really nice papers, and the turnaround time can be very very quick.  You can also do very very small quantities without being penalized on the cost.
  • Offset Printing: Most modern printing is offset printing, also known as lithography. From magazines to postcards, this flat style of printing is a familiar one, and appropriate for an informal wedding invitation. Traditionally, an inked image is transferred from an inked plate to a rubber “blanket”, which is then passed over the paper. The quality of offset printing can vary greatly, so be sure to look for a printer who can deliver crisp quality and true colors.  It is slightly more expensive than digital printing, depending on your quantity.  You probably only want to consider it if you have around 100 invitations or so.
  • Thermography : Thermography gives you the look of engraving without the cost.  The letters or design will be raised while the opposite side of the paper remains smooth. This type of printing can be done in several colors and will give a formal appearance.  The printer uses ink and a powder resin combined with heat to reproduce the raised lettering effect of engraving. The text has a shiny finish and is often said to not be as sharp as engraving.
  • Embossing: Most often used for small insignias, monograms, or return addresses, this process creates a raised impression on paper by running the paper through two metal sheets. When no ink is used, it is called “blind” embossing. Although a printer can perform this service for you, you can also buy a small embosser with your monogram or return address on the plate, allowing you to create custom stationery in a more affordable way.
  • Letterpress: Letterpress is increasing in popularity every day.  A letterpress printer presses inked letters or designs into a piece of paper, forming an indented surface. By repeating the process, he or she can create images with more than one color. It really is beautiful but is also one of the more expensive printing types because it is labor intensive.  Most of your cost with letterpress is for the plate and the setup.  I have often been asked if you can letterpress just a few of your invitations and not the rest – the truth is, the setup cost is the most expensive part, so letterpressing, say 25 invitations, can be very expensive per piece, while doing 150 will have a much lower per piece cost.  Also, if you want an exact sample of YOUR invitation for letterpress, it may be a bit pricier than with other types of printing because the plate has to be made.  Then, if you want to make any changes, an entirely new plate would have to be made.  Sometimes people don’t understand the process and why there are certain things that take longer / cost more, and that’s why.

Unless you go directly to a print shop {and even that would have to be a pretty advanced one}, most invitation studios will do one of the printing types in house and outsource the others to fellow professionals. Each type requires very specialized equipment.

I hope this sheds some light on the complicated world of wedding invitations – and we didn’t even TALK about PAPER! :-)

This will be my third holiday season as an Etsy seller / entrepreneur. It’s always such a whirlwind! The holidays are crazy as a consumer, but to be a retailer and a consumer is complete insanity.

I learn something new every time I go through wedding season or the holiday season or really just every day I wake up and keep plugging away at this business.

One of the big keys to being a stationery seller is that my product almost always peaks very early in whatever season we’re talking about. Wedding invitations go out well before the actual wedding, and Christmas cards go out before Christmas — they aren’t purchased to be opened on Christmas like many other products. So even though it’s only November 7th, the Christmas card business is moving along!

Many of my customers are small businesses looking to send personal notes to their clients in the holiday season. I love doing custom orders like these – I think it’s fantastic that businesses still recognize that a physical piece of mail carries more wait than an email newsletter. Do you agree?

Last year I did cookies for all of my local clients and had the best time running around town delivering them. We’ll have to see what I come up with this year!

The above card is a late addition to my Christmas card lineup for the year – Jessica of Two Wedding Belles requested the street sign design as a Christmas card and I thought it was a fantastic idea! It’s a neat way to send a personalized card from your family or business – available now in the Etsy shop :-)

Hello everyone! How was your weekend? Mine was really nice. It was chilly here in Charleston but we didn’t mind too much. On Friday I got to have breakfast with a few awesome girls…

Ali from Honey Been Invites in Atlanta {and a fellow UGA grad!}, {me}, Layla from Simply Savannah Events, and Jeni from Seastar Arts {ok so I already know her :-)}. It was so fun to meet people in the industry I didn’t know and make friends!

The hubby and I spent the weekend trying to put away all of our new wedding dishes and fun gifts. Next time I attend a wedding, I’m giving the happy couple some Goo Gone to go with their gifts lol…it took forever to remove the stickers on everything! I was so excited about these cute little glasses from Pottery Barn…

…and then I realized they are handwash. Bummer! I guess they will be my “Sunday” cups lol.

We also took the new camera out for a spin so we could learn the ropes a bit before we are traipsing around Europe. Here are a few shots we snapped…

I am so excited to take this to Europe. It’s such a cool camera!

How was your weekend?

I am SUPER excited this morning. Why, you ask?

Well, I participated in Krysten’s Stay Warm, Look Snazzy scarf swap this year, which resulted in me getting a box of the sweetest Fall goodies from The Scientific Housewife this week. How did she know I had a massive shortage of candy corn this year?! So now I get to take a tour of her blog and the other participants. Such fun!

And not only that, but we got our new camera this week! Woohoo! Dodeline previously operated with a three year old point & shoot which is now settling into a happy retirement. We decided for the upcoming trip & for the amount of product photography / blogging I do, it was high time to get a better camera.

Enter the Sony NEX-59K. It’s a four thirds camera, which means it’s kind of a hybrid between a point and shoot and an SLR. It’s more portable than a normal SLR but it has the benefit of a real shutter and the ability to change lenses. Other than that bit of knowledge, I’m out of my league here and will be experimenting a lot in the next few months to learn more.

The photo above I snapped off with it with no editing or anything. I love that it was smart enough to focus on the right things! Normally I’m coaxing / yelling at the camera to focus on what I want ;-)

So what’s making you happy this week? The fact that it’s Friday? That’s pretty swell too.

Happy weekend!

I have always loved crafts. When I was little my mom was always coming up with fun crafts we could do together and they are some of my favorite memories. One memorable year we made three nutcracker soldiers out of clay pots. It looked so simple but it was such a complicated project lol. They were so neat and we still have one of them today, the other two being given away as lovely handmade gifts.

Of course in college and stuff I was a bit busy with “serious art” and didn’t have any place to decorate hardly anyway. And then Pinterest came on the scene, and now I’m dying to make about a million different holiday crafts this year!

Cupcake Liner Carnations

How easy is this? And so cute!

Yarn Wreaths

I made a yarn wreath a few years ago that I donated, but I would love to have one to keep. This little snowman is so cute!

Book Pinwheels

It would be so cute to make a bunch of these for the tree, and inexpensive too.

Salt Dough

The other thing I’m loving is this salt dough tutorial posted by Simply Savannah Events. They would make the cutest ornaments!

So, are you a crafter? Have any good ones to share as we gear up for the holiday season?

These are probably some of the most unique, fun invitations I’ve ever done with a bride I totally hit it off with. We share a quirky sense of humor :-)

“Owl always love you,” dear readers! ;-)

So, I’m totally switching gears on you now, from Halloween to Christmas in only one day! Sorry, but you know the way it works with product development, I have to be ahead of the curve :-) Although, the craft stores & malls already have Christmas up, so I guess I’m behind!

Anyway, I was looking around at Christmas gift tags and although there are a lot of cute ones, I decided I wanted some unique ones to add to the more common “do not open until 12/25″ varieties. So here’s what I came up with, and you can find them all in the Etsy shop!

Those are Iphone photos. I am waiting impatiently for my new camera to arrive so I can start taking better impromptu shots!

What’s up with you today? :-)
